Henley Royal Regatta
First held in 1839 the Henley Royal Regatta has a long and distinguished rowing and social event history. In fact it's older than any of the national and international Rowing Federations that now officially recognise it. It has enjoyed Royal Patronage since 1851 when HRH Prince Albert became its first Patron. Every reigning Monarch since has consented to be Patron since.
You will see lots of racing each day. The Henley Regatta works on a knock-out draw with only 2 boats racing in each heat so that means there can be some 90 races on a day leaving at 5 minute intervals. As the course take about 7 minutes to complete you will often see 2 races on the course at the same time - so you are never going to be short of something to cheer!
There are 20 events in total at the Regatta covering everything from Coxless pairs and and Double Sculls to Fours and Eights. The finals for all the events and prize giving are on the last day of the Regatta.
Of course in addition to the rowing Henley has become well established in the social society scene, very much the place to be seen in the summer social calendar. The Stewards Enclosure has a strict dress code in accordance with this and you will see plenty of fashion, champagne and strawberries and cream. The Regatta Enclosure is less formal - see below - but still a great day out on the bank of the Thames.
If you are going or have been, tell us about it via our Facebook page. We would love to hear about it and see some pictures.
